Food preference VS food rule
Do you know the difference?
Food PREFERENCES are how you live your life without fear if that food preference cannot quite be met due to one reason or another. Let’s say you don’t really like avocado, but you dip a dorito into some guac and avo ends up in your mouth. It’s no biggie. You don’t really like it, but you don’t walk away with guilt or fear or angry at yourself for something you “shouldn’t have done”.
Food RULES often contribute to disordered eating thinking, morality around food (‘good’ vs ‘bad’ mentality), and often instil fear, bias, negativity, guilt. Let’s say for example you have a belief you shouldn’t be eating chocolate for XYZ reason, but you eat some because you really wanted it, and you walk away feeling guilty/angry/worried/negative about it and it tends to carry through for some time after the eating experience is over.
Food preferences are just how you live your life naturally with food. Food rules can seem like they control your entire life with food. Food rules are exhausting.
