Eating Disorders


Did you know…

Eating Disorders have been increasing over the last 30 years (NEDC, 2019).

-

1 in 11 Australians will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime (NEDC, 2019).

Eating Disorders have one of the highest mortality (death) rates of any mental illness (anorexia nervosa (AN) has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness) (Butterfly Foundation, 2020).

In Sport, the prevalence of disordered eating includes up to 66% of females & 33% of males (NEDC, 2019).

~25, 000 Australians are currently living with Anorexia Nervosa. ~100, 000 Australians are currently living with Bulimia Nervosa. ~500, 000 Australians are currently living with Binge Eating Disorder. ~350, 000 Australians are currently living with other forms of eating disorders (Butterfly Foundation, 2020).

The single biggest predictor for the development of an eating disorder is dieting. Yep, you heard that right - dieting is the single biggest predictor for the development of an eating disorder.

The diet industry is worth $190 billion globally.

We live in a culture that idolizes thinness and perpetually celebrates under-nourishment in order to *attempt to* achieve unrealistic body standards. This isn’t a quest for better health. It’s a quest to conform to social ideals. Which often has us heading in the opposite direction of health, especially when we start to break down the many negative effects of dieting, including the metabolic effects of weight cycling (which 95% of dieting endeavours result in), rapid weight loss (reduces metabolic rate —> in turn, contributing to weight cycling), weight stigma and discrimination, eating disorders, food & body preoccupation, body dissatisfaction, distraction from other personal health goals, reduced self-esteem and paradoxically – weight gain.

WE are the culture. And together, we have to work to change it.

Eating disorders are complex, individual and do not have a look or common cause. I am shining light on SOME aspects of eating disorders in this post while it does not in ANY way address the multi-faceted nature of eating disorders & the complexities involved.

With the right treatment & support, a full recovery from an eating disorder

is possible. 90% of patients given an effective treatment within 3 years of illness onset have a positive outcome at 5 years (NED, 2019). Early intervention is key. Reach out if you or someone you know needs some support.

Take home: Please check on your dieting friends. ED’s are most common in groups involved in dieting and weight loss. Disordered eating often flies under the radar in said groups and is even (often, unintentionally) celebrated in some instances by friends, family, colleagues, and even health & fitness professionals. As the post highlights, we need to identify disordered eating before it becomes an eating disorder.

Note: This is not every health professional, and health/fitness professionals are not immune to the effects of diet culture so please seek out appropriate support.
