Core Value - Compassion
Updated: Nov 21, 2019
Compassion is one of the 3 main Core Values of The Intuitive Dietitian Clinic.
When I sat with compassion, and had a really good think about what compassion meant to me, and what providing compassion to someone looks like, I came up with the following:
“We challenge ourselves everyday to cultivate an atmosphere of empathy and understanding, providing a kind and loving environment for all that is free from judgement.”
I believe compassion is at the heart of it all.
Compassion is understanding, without judgement.
And it's something that helps us to form connection with other human beings.
As important and special as it is to provide compassion for others. So too is it just as important to generate SELF compassion. That is, compassion for ourselves, too!
'Self compassion is associated with well-being, increased feelings of happiness, and greater personal initiative to make needed changes in your life" (Neff 2003, 2016; Neff and Costigan 2014).
Self-compassion is having a neutral but understanding consideration of yourself and your actions.
In regards to Intuitive Eating, research has shown that self-compassion helps people overcome their guilt with their eating choices (Adams and Leary 2007).
Self-compassion can help promote change. This is directly related to the fact that self-compassionate individuals do not criticise or bully themselves when they make mistakes. This makes it easier to admit vulnerability and mistakes, change unproductive behaviours, and take on new challenges (such as Intuitive Eating!).
I love how Brene Brown talks about compassion in one of her podcasts. She says:
"Compassion is knowing our own darkness well enough that we can sit in the dark with others.
It is never a relationship between the wounded and the healed, but a relationship between equals.
No one reaches out to you for compassion and empathy, so that you can teach them how to behave better.
They reach out to us, because they believe in our capacity to know our darkness well enough to sit in the dark with them."
You will always be met with compassion when you step foot into The Intuitive Dietitian Clinic, and you'll always be encouraged and guided on how to generate more SELF-compassion for yourself too.
